The Museum of Youth Culture is to open in Camden, London, on 15 May 2026. In a press statement, the museum said it would be: ‘…the UK's first permanent institution dedicated to preserving youth culture as a defining force in modern British history’.
The statement continued, ‘At a time when grassroots venues continue to close, the act of preserving youth culture has taken on a new urgency. The Museum of Youth Culture recognises youth movements not as nostalgia but as a vital part of Britain's cultural history.
‘For generations, youth movements have emerged from clubs, record shops, markets and community halls. They have shaped how Britain dresses, speaks, creates and organises. From style and sound to politics and identity, youth culture has repeatedly redrawn the cultural landscape of the country.
‘The Museum of Youth Culture is the world's first museum dedicated to the lives of teenagers and young people. Working to preserve this overlooked and often untold story, the museum champions the impact of youth culture on modern society and works to change pervasive narratives around young people. The museum works with young people to explore their experiences as teenagers today and to envision what a future museum should look like.
‘Spanning three gallery spaces, the museum brings together photography, artefacts, audio, fashion and print to trace the evolution of British youth movements across decades. It documents how subcultures emerge at the margins before shaping the mainstream, and how generations of young people continue to redefine Britain's creative identity.’
