Carl Mann: ‘Find Me There’ started when I was just kind of strumming. I think I was just bored, playing these few chords and thinking, ‘How else can I play those?’ Then I started humming a melody. I normally just sing whatever comes into my head when I start these things, but the first line I sang was, ‘When the wind blows inside my head’. That ended up being the first line of the song.
The song is about how I get lost in music. Sometimes it annoys Kat [Shapes Like People's vocalist and Carl's wife], because she’ll be asking me something and she’s like, ‘You’re in the room, but you’re not here, are you?’ I get so lost when I’m writing that I’m just a shell to everyone else. That song is kind of about that, where I disappear into music. It’s the best place on earth. It’s a huge high.
So, I had a few lines when I first got Kat to come and sing it. Honestly, I had my headphones on, she started singing, and I had streams of tears coming out of my eyes. Every hair on my body was standing up! I couldn’t look around at her because… yeah, boys don’t cry. But it sounded so beautiful, and her voice sounded perfect on it.
So it was moving because Kat was voicing how you felt about your happy place?
Right. Suddenly it went up a few levels hearing Kat sing it, because her voice and that melody sounded so great together. It was perfect. At that point, I decided I wasn’t going to fill it with loads of guitar riffs. Guitar-wise, I did kind of dream-poppy, slightly shoegazey layers of simple, delayed stuff. It’s not over-the-top; it’s quite subtle. The vocal is it. It needs its own platform.
